Established in the year 1977, Welingkar School of Distance Learning or WeSchool was set up in Matunga, Mumbai. The institute is among Top 50 Business Schools by NIRF and the institute is recognized by AICTE. The college was established under the aegis of SP Mandali Trust and is an autonomous institute affiliated with the University of Mumbai. Welingkar’s Mumbai and Bangalore campus offer MBA via different modes such as - on campus and via hybrid mode.

In 2008, the institute started its new campus in Bangalore. The university also bagged the AICTE -  "Best industry-linked management institute" award in 2015. Over the time the institute has outreached to international bodies and institutes for collaborations such as - Otto Friedrich Universidad and Stuttgart Media University, Jonkoping International Business School, Unitec Institute to name a few.
